Programs and Initiatives
Surfing Queensland Academy
In 2022 Surfing Queensland (SQ) launched the Surfing Queensland Academy (SQA). The program was established to provide the opportunities and pathways for our junior surfers in Queensland.
Just one year after launching the program, the SQA saw great success with the QLD state team displaying their mastery of surfing at the 2022 Australian Junior Titles.
The QLD team was crowned the overall state champions and won with the biggest winning margin seen in in over 22 years, proving the success of the SQA. As of 2023, Queensland has gone back-to-back winning the title two years in a row.
Surf Sisters
The Surf Sisters program is dedicated to breaking down participation barriers for women by providing more inclusive and supportive opportunities to get involved with the sport and continue active participation long term.
In 2023, the Surf Sisters program witnessed 184 free surf lessons provided to 1600 women.
In 2024, the Surf Sisters program hosted a Womens Surf Day for 200+ women to celebrate Women’s International Day.
Surfers Rescue 24/7
Surfers Rescue 24/7 is a program specifically designed to arm recreational surfers with the skills needed to save lives.
From dawn till dusk, 365 days a year, recreational surfers are utilising Queensland’s beaches. As a cohort, they equate to over 80 million hours of skilled people who can help reduce the amount of drowning related deaths on Queensland’s beaches.
Opportunity exists to align with what will become a movement to protect the lives of people using Queensland’s beaches.
Jallum Jarjums
Jallum Jarjum is the translation of the word’s ‘fish kids’ into traditional Indigenous language.
The Jallum Jarjum program aims to introduce Indigenous youth to the sport of surfing and its associated health benefits whilst also offering a pathway to employment for Indigenous male and female youth, through surfing.
